EV Tax Credits in 2026: What Changed and What’s Left

The US electric-car landscape changed sharply in 2025, and a lot of the advice still floating around online is now out of date. If you’re shopping for an EV in 2026 — or you run a dealership or shop — here’s where things actually stand.

The federal tax credit is gone

This is the big one. The federal EV tax credits — up to $7,500 for new and $4,000 for used — ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, under the 2025 budget law. If you bought before that cutoff you may still claim it on your return, but for a purchase in 2026 there’s no general federal purchase credit anymore. Don’t budget around money that no longer exists.

What’s still available

  • State and utility incentives: several states and local utilities still offer rebates or perks — these vary a lot by location, so check yours.
  • Home charger credit: a federal tax credit for installing a home charger remains available through June 30, 2026, in eligible areas.
  • Used-EV value: with the federal credits gone, used-EV prices have softened in places — sometimes the best value is a gently-used model rather than new.

The running-cost case still holds

Charging at home is generally cheaper per mile than gas, and EVs have fewer moving parts, so maintenance tends to be lighter — no oil changes, fewer wearing components. Over several years of ownership, that gap is real, credit or no credit.

The honest trade-offs

  • Charging: easiest and cheapest at home; if you can’t charge at home, factor in public charging habits and cost.
  • Range: modern EVs handle typical daily driving easily, but check the real-world range for road trips.
  • Battery health: on a used EV, ask about battery condition and remaining warranty.

If you’re a dealer or shop

Buyers are confused — especially about the credits ending. Dealers and shops that clearly explain what’s changed, what’s left, and the real running-cost picture build trust and win sales. “Is the EV tax credit gone”, “used EV deals” and “EV service near me” are exactly the searches spiking right now, and most competitors aren’t answering them well.

That’s the kind of content we build for auto clients. To get your dealership or shop showing up for the searches your customers are making, start with a free visibility audit.
